Pro Video Card Upgrade Graphic Card

Adding drives to this Mac Pro is super easy. You Get desktop-class graphics performance on your MacBook Pro with the Blackmagic. Over the years I’ve upgraded it with several SSDs and to 16GB RAM. My Mac Pro is a single-CPU, quad-core 2.93Ghz model (Intel Xeon W3540) with the ATI Radeon HD 4870 video card. If there is a graphics driver update, it will be included in the Mac OS X update.Hi guys, I just upgraded my original mbp early 2011 320GB HDD to a SSD and 16GB RAM, and just due to curiosity, can I actually upgrade graphic card for it, as I've seen apple official store lists the graphic card sales under macbook accessories section.Verified Buyer Reviewer: TWDGroup Location: Sacramento, CA Age: 45-54 Experience Level: Power User Owned Product: less than a month Rating: 5/5 My "Hackintosh" lives on OctoI've been eyeing a way to stave off obsolescence of my mid-2010 Mac pro, since it’s a workhorse choked with RAM, multiple hard drives, and an OWC PCI card and SSD.So I’m sticking with my classic Mac Pro (or Mac Pro tower) for the time being.

On its own, this beast simply draws way too much power through the PCI slot, so this is a clever solution. Gotta say I was skeptical of plugging a non-supported PC card into the Mac and expect it to flame on with no problems.I think the key is the custom power cable that OWC bundles with this card. 10.14 and up requires the “metal” video card, and my stock system was no longer compatible.

Pro Video Card Install Could Not

Just make sure to plug the dual power cables into their plugs first — then seat the new video card, otherwise you won’t have enough space to maneuver. The lack of a glowing Apple at boot up was a little disconcerting, but within 15 seconds, the familiar login screen appeared.Apple needs to sell new hardware, so it gradually orphans older, functional workstations like the 2010/2012 Pros. So, the new card drives both with zero fan noise. The install could not have been simpler. That card also needs a motherboard plug.

Digging further I found that there was an option I could choose in my newer monitors that would correct the issue. Now DVI to HDMI works and there is no need to spend my time and money returning a product that was functioning properly. That three calls to tech support at OWC and one to Radeon didn't catch this is amazing to me. I wound up digging out an old monitor that had a DVI input and ran a straight DVI to DVI connection. Nothing worked - although any and all combination of the same monitors and adapters worked with my old GPU.We concluded that that DVI port was bad and I got a return auth. I tried 3 monitors and several DVI adapters of different types. When using a DVI to HDMI adaptor I kept getting a pink overlay on all monitors. As I'm using the second PCIe slot in my Mac for an Avid HDX card (which also requires power from motherboard), I'm using an external Corsair PSU I had to power the graphics card. This is a three star review because tech support from both OWC and Radeon completely missed diagnosing an issue I had when using the DVI port.

It also has the side benefit of being essentially silent. In many cases it is 1.5X faster than the 7950. The RX 580 has performed admirably. Many apps are now using the GPU as much or more than the CPU for computational intensive apps. I already had Metal support for my Mac Pro (Radeon 7950), but needed a little more oomph in GPU performance.

If the bundle is still shipping with a single power cable, it may not be adequate in certain high intensity GPU usage. At least that is how it ends up on my 2012 Mac Pro.2. Holding down Command + s (single user mode), Shift key (safe mode), or option key (showing boot disk choices) upon reboot will end up with a blank screen that needs a hard shut down to be resolved. Holding down keystrokes upon rebooting doesn’t work. For most users these may not be an issue, but I feel it is important to be aware of them.1.This card is not fully supported on the Mac Pro using High Sierra (10.13) or Mojave (10.14). So my Mac is very, very quiet most of the time.I downgraded the card to 4 stars for two reasons.

Since most of what I do involves a heavy amount of Adobe CC Photoshop and InDesign usage along with a increasing amount of time being spent on both DaVinci Resolve Finial Cut Pro X for video editing, I was in need of graphics card with more GPU.
